Cultural Note: Hindi frames habits the same involuntary way it frames feelings and needs: आदत पड़ना (aadat padnaa) means the habit 'falls upon' you, much like नींद आना (niind aanaa, sleep 'comes' to you) -- habits are things that happen to you, not things you simply do. A Delhi parent scolding a kid about a bad habit will often say यह अच्छी आदत नहीं है (yah achchhii aadat nahiin hai, 'this isn't a good habit') rather than criticizing the child directly, which softens the blame onto the habit itself.
Common Mistakes: 1) Learners often say मुझे आदत है (mujhe aadat hai) when they mean 'I am used to it' -- this is correct, but the postposition after the habit itself is की (kii), not से (se) or को (ko): मुझे चाय पीने की आदत है (mujhe chaay piine kii aadat hai, 'I am used to/have a habit of drinking tea'). 2) Confusing आदत पड़ना (aadat padnaa, habit forms on its own, involuntary) with आदत डालना (aadat daalnaa, to deliberately instill a habit, agentive) -- these are not interchangeable.
