भूगोल (bhoogol)
noun
A single-sense noun meaning 'geography', both as an academic subject and as the physical lay of a land or place. Built from भू (bhoo, 'earth') + गोल (gol, 'round/sphere' -- literally 'the roundness of the earth').
Sense
1
:
geography (as a subject or the physical layout of a place)
noun, masculine
Frequency: high
Cultural Note: Every Indian student meets भूगोल (bhoogol) as one of the core सामाजिक विज्ञान (saamaajik vigyaan, 'social science') subjects in school, right alongside इतिहास (itihaas, 'history') and नागरिक शास्त्र (naagrik shaastr, 'civics'). Politically minded speakers also stretch it metaphorically, as in किसी मुद्दे का भूगोल बदल देना (kisii mudde kaa bhoogol badal denaa, 'to change the entire landscape/shape of an issue'), much like English uses 'geography' loosely for 'the layout of a situation.'
Common Mistakes: 1) Learners sometimes use भूगोल (bhoogol) only for the school subject, but it is equally common to describe the actual terrain or layout of a region, e.g. किसी इलाके का भूगोल (kisii ilaake kaa bhoogol, 'the geography/lay of an area') -- closer to English 'terrain' or 'lay of the land' than to the textbook sense alone.
