फ़रवरी (faravrii)

noun The name of the month of February; a single straightforward sense borrowed from English.
Sense 1 : the month of February
noun, feminine
Frequency: high
Cultural Note: Hindi simply borrowed the English month names wholesale, unlike the older desi calendar months (चैत्र, वैशाख, etc.) still used for festivals and almanacs. In daily conversation, dates and months in Delhi-NCR are almost always given in this English-derived style -- फ़रवरी (faravrii), मार्च (maarch), and so on -- while the traditional Hindu calendar months live on mainly in religious or rural contexts.
Common Mistakes: 1) Learners sometimes add an extra vowel sound or drop the nuqta, saying फरवरी (pharavrii) instead of फ़रवरी (faravrii) -- both are seen in writing, but the nuqta-form pronunciation with a soft 'f' sound (as opposed to 'ph') is the standard spoken version in Delhi-NCR. 2) Like other month names, it does not take gender agreement itself; the sentence's verb agrees with whatever noun phrase is really the subject, e.g. फ़रवरी आ गई (faravrii aa gaii, 'February has arrived') -- the feminine agreement here comes from महीना (mahiinaa) being conceptually replaced by the feminine तारीख़/महीने की बात, but in practice most speakers just treat महीना (mahiinaa) itself as the implicit masculine referent and say फ़रवरी आ गया (faravrii aa gayaa); both patterns are heard, so don't be surprised by variation.
