Cultural Note: This is straight out of Bollywood chatter -- ask any Delhi teenager who the हीरो (hiiro) of a new film is, and they will never say नायक (naayak). The word has fully naturalized into Hindi film talk, sitting alongside हीरोइन (hiiroin) and विलन (vilan) as the standard cast vocabulary.
Common Mistakes: 1) Learners sometimes reach for नायक (naayak) by default because it is the 'dictionary' word, but in casual conversation about films हीरो (hiiro) is what people actually say -- नायक (naayak) sounds like something from a review or textbook. 2) The female counterpart is हीरोइन (hiiroin), not a feminine form of हीरो (hiiro) itself -- हीरो (hiiro) stays invariant regardless of who is being discussed generically.

Cultural Note: A mother scolding a son who did something reckless might say, तुम कोई हीरो नहीं हो (tum koii hiiro nahiin ho, 'you're no hero'), or friends might rib someone acting overconfident as अपने को हीरो समझता है (apne ko hiiro samajhtaa hai, 'he thinks he's such a hero'). This figurative use grows directly from the film sense -- the swagger of the film हीरो (hiiro) is projected onto real life, sometimes sincerely, often with a wink.
