Cultural Note: Hindi numerals from 1 to 100 are famously irregular and each one is really learned as its own little word rather than built from a predictable pattern, so तेरह (terah) just has to be memorized like its neighbors बारह (baarah, 'twelve') and चौदह (chaudah, 'fourteen'). This is a common pain point for learners coming from more mechanically-built number systems.
Common Mistakes: 1) Like other Hindi numerals, तेरह (terah) does not change form based on the gender of the noun it counts -- तेरह लड़के (terah ladke, 'thirteen boys') and तेरह लड़कियाँ (terah ladkiyaan, 'thirteen girls') both use the same form. 2) Learners sometimes confuse तेरह (terah, 'thirteen') with तीन (tiin, 'three') or तीसरा (tiisraa, 'third') because of the similar-sounding initial syllable -- listen carefully for the ending.
