Cultural Note: This filler use is very much a spoken-register habit -- you will hear it constantly in real conversation, stitching sentences together or checking that the listener is still on board, but it rarely shows up this way in formal writing.

Common Mistakes: 1) Learners tend to only recognize हाँ (haan) as 'yes' and miss it when it appears mid-conversation as a filler, for example हाँ, तो फिर क्या हुआ (haan, to phir kyaa huaa, 'so, then what happened') -- here it is not answering anything, just picking the thread back up. 2) Placed at the end of a statement, हाँ (haan) can function like a tag-question seeking confirmation, similar to 'right?' in English, e.g. तुम आ रहे हो, हाँ (tum aa rahe ho, haan, 'you're coming, right').
