Cultural Note: आठ (aath) shows up constantly in daily life -- टाइम आठ बजे है (taaim aath baje hai, 'the time is eight o'clock') for telling time, or ऊपर से आठवीं मंज़िल (oopar se aathviin manzil, 'the eighth floor from the top') style references. Note the ordinal आठवाँ (aathvaan, eighth) is a related but separate lemma built from this root.
Common Mistakes: 1) आठ (aath) is invariant -- it does not change form before masculine or feminine nouns, unlike ordinal or some other number-derived words: आठ लड़के (aath ladke, eight boys) and आठ लड़कियाँ (aath ladkiyaan, eight girls) both use the same form. 2) Learners sometimes confuse आठ (aath, eight) with आठवाँ (aathvaan, eighth) -- the ordinal needs the separate -वाँ suffix, it is not formed by adding anything to आठ (aath) directly in casual speech patterns learners might guess at.
