Cultural Note: Like most Hindi numbers in the thirties, चौंतीस (chauntiis) is one of those forms you just drill with flashcards -- there's no shortcut formula the way there sort of is in English. It shows up in everyday contexts like ages, prices, bus and train numbers, and page numbers, so it's worth getting comfortable with even though it looks intimidating at first.
Common Mistakes: 1) Hindi numerals from twenty to ninety-nine are not built predictably from tens plus units the way English is; चौंतीस (chauntiis) for 34 must simply be memorized rather than derived from तीस (tiis, thirty) and चार (chaar, four). 2) Learners sometimes confuse it with चौदह (chaudah, fourteen) because both start with the चौ- sound; listen for the fuller, longer body of चौंतीस (chauntiis).
