भले (bhale)

Two related uses: an adverb/particle meaning 'even if, granted that' (used with 'भी' (bhii) later in the sentence to mean 'even though'), and a set phrase 'भले ही' (bhale hii) with the same concessive force. Also survives as the oblique/plural form of the adjective भला (bhalaa, 'good, kind'), which the learner will meet separately.

Cultural Note: This is the classic 'yes, but...' word in Hindi arguments -- a mother might say भले वह बड़ा हो गया हो, मेरे लिए तो बच्चा ही है (bhale vah badaa ho gayaa ho, mere lie to bachchaa hii hai, 'granted he has grown up, to me he is still a child'), conceding a point while holding her ground. It pairs naturally with चाहे (chaahe) in tone but is a touch more formal-sounding in everyday Delhi speech.
Common Mistakes: 1) Learners often drop the correlative भी (bhii) from the main clause, which sounds incomplete to native ears -- भले X हो, Y भी (bhii) होना चाहिए is the natural pattern. 2) भले is frequently confused with अगर (agar) 'if' -- भले sets up a concession ('even if/granted'), not a plain condition, so the second clause should contrast rather than simply follow.
