Cultural Note: तीस (tiis) shows up constantly in everyday contexts like ages, prices, and time -- ऊमर तीस साल (oomar tiis saal, 'age thirty years') or तीस रुपये (tiis rupye, 'thirty rupees') at a Delhi market stall. It is also the base for a whole family of number words from 31 to 39, so getting comfortable with तीस (tiis) itself is the first step toward that block.

Common Mistakes: 1) Learners sometimes confuse तीस (tiis, 30) with तीज़ (tiiz) or with तीन (tiin, three) because of the similar-sounding initial syllable -- listen for the स (s) ending. 2) Like other Hindi numerals above ten, तीस (tiis) does not combine predictably with units the way English 'thirty' + digit does; compound numbers (31, 32...) are their own separate words (इकतीस iktiis, बत्तीस battiis) rather than तीस (tiis) plus a unit word.
