असल में (asal men)

Cultural Note: This is the phrase people reach for when gently correcting someone: someone assumes one thing, and you step in with असल में (asal men, 'actually...') to reveal what's really going on. Its close cousin दरअसल (daraasal) does the same job in a single word and is extremely common in spoken Delhi Hindi -- you'll hear the two used interchangeably by the same speaker in one conversation.

Common Mistakes: 1) Learners often place असल में (asal men) only at the end of a sentence, as English speakers do with 'actually'; native speakers most often put it at the very start of the sentence, right where the correction or clarification begins. 2) Don't confuse it with सच में (sach men, 'really/truly'), which expresses sincerity or surprise rather than correcting a wrong impression.
