चाहिए (chaahie)
verb
The frozen modal 'should/need/want,' functioning as Hindi's main way to express necessity, obligation, or desire; historically frozen from चाहना (chaahnaa, 'to want') but now used on its own with को-marked subjects.
Sense
1
:
need/require (a thing)
verb Takes a को-marked experiencer and a nominative object: मुझे पानी चाहिए (mujhe paanii chaahie, 'I need water'); the object, not the person, drives agreement, so चाहिए becomes चाहिए/चाहिएँ or है/हैं-style number agreement with what is needed (e.g. मुझे किताबें चाहिए, mujhe kitaaben chaahie, 'I need books').
Synonyms: जरूरत होना (jaroorat honaa, phrase, alternate construction)
Frequency: high
Cultural Note: This is one of the first 'dative-subject' patterns learners meet: the person who needs something is not the grammatical subject in the English sense, they are the one something happens 'to' -- मुझे (mujhe) literally 'to me.' You will hear this everywhere in markets and homes: दो किलो आलू चाहिए (do kilo aaloo chaahie, 'I need two kilos of potatoes') said to a vendor, no 'I' required at all.
Common Mistakes: 1) Learners often try to conjugate चाहिए (chaahie) for tense the way normal verbs are, but it does not take tense endings itself -- past/future necessity is expressed by adding था/थी/थे (thaa/thii/the) or होगा-forms around it, e.g. मुझे पानी चाहिए था (mujhe paanii chaahie thaa, 'I needed water'). 2) Learners sometimes mark the person with ने (ne) by analogy with other verbs, but this construction always uses को (ko), never ने (ne).
Sample Sentences:
मुझे एक गिलास पानी चाहिए।
I need a glass of water.
(mujhe ek gilaas paanii chaahie।)
भैया, दो किलो आलू चाहिए।

Sense
2
:
should/ought to (do something)
verb Combines with a verb's oblique infinitive to express obligation: उसे जाना चाहिए (use jaanaa chaahie, 'he/she should go'); negated with नहीं (nahiin) placed before चाहिए, e.g. उसे जाना नहीं चाहिए (use jaanaa nahiin chaahie, 'he/she should not go').
Frequency: high
Cultural Note: This is the sense parents, teachers, and doctors reach for constantly -- तुम्हें ज़्यादा पानी पीना चाहिए (tumhen zyaadaa paanii piinaa chaahie, 'you should drink more water') is classic advice-giving register in Hindi, gentle but firm, and far more common in daily speech than a stronger word like ज़रूरी है (zaroorii hai).
Common Mistakes: 1) Learners sometimes place नहीं (nahiin) after चाहिए (chaahie) instead of before it; the natural word order keeps नहीं (nahiin) immediately before चाहिए (chaahie). 2) The subject doing the action still takes को (ko), not ने (ne), which surprises learners since this sense expresses an action, not just possession of a thing.
Sample Sentences:
तुम्हें ज़्यादा पानी पीना चाहिए।
You should drink more water.
(tumhen zyaadaa paanii piinaa chaahie।)
