पसंद करना (pasand karnaa)
verb
This is the verb form built on the noun पसंद (pasand, 'liking, preference') plus करना (karnaa, 'to do'), meaning 'to like' something or someone.
Sense
1
:
to like (a thing, activity, or person)
verb, transitive Takes ने (ne) on the subject in the perfective, since करना (karnaa) is transitive: मैंने यह फ़िल्म पसंद की (mainne yah film pasand kii, 'I liked this film'). Note the object agreement lands on पसंद (pasand) itself (feminine), giving की (kii) rather than किया (kiyaa).
Synonyms: भाना (bhaanaa, used with दातिव subject, less common in active voice), अच्छा लगना (achchhaa lagnaa, more common in casual speech)
Frequency: high
Cultural Note: Hindi actually has two everyday ways to say 'I like this': मुझे यह पसंद है (mujhe yah pasand hai, dative-subject, more common and neutral in tone) and मैं यह पसंद करता हूँ (main yah pasand kartaa hoon, subject-agent, feels slightly more deliberate or formal, as if stating a preference rather than just describing a feeling). Both are correct and interchangeable in most contexts, but the पसंद करना (pasand karnaa) form is especially natural in the past tense and with people: उसने मुझे पसंद किया (usne mujhe pasand kiyaa, 'he/she liked me').
Common Mistakes: 1) Learners often reach for अच्छा लगना (achchhaa lagnaa) construction (को-marked subject) and forget that पसंद करना (pasand karnaa) instead keeps a normal ने-marked subject in the past tense -- मुझे यह पसंद है (mujhe yah pasand hai) is fine for 'I like this' in the present, but the past 'I liked this' is मैंने यह पसंद किया (mainne yah pasand kiyaa) not मुझे यह पसंद किया (mujhe yah pasand kiyaa). 2) Because पसंद (pasand) is grammatically feminine, the verb agrees with it, not with the object being liked -- मैंने यह किताब पसंद की (mainne yah kitaab pasand kii), not पसंद किया (pasand kiyaa), even though किताब (kitaab) is also feminine here (a coincidence that can mask the real rule).
