चिढ़ना (chidhnaa)
verb
A single core sense: to feel irritated or annoyed, often in a lingering, simmering way rather than a sudden outburst. Closely related to the causative चिढ़ाना (chidhaanaa, 'to tease/irritate someone'), which is a separate lemma.
Sense
1
:
to become irritated/annoyed
verb, intransitive Commonly used with से (se) marking the person or thing that causes the irritation, e.g. वह मुझसे चिढ़ता है (vah mujhse chidhtaa hai, 'he is irritated with/by me').
Synonyms: नाराज़ होना (naaraaz honaa), खीजना (khiijnaa, captures the fretful/frustrated edge more than pure annoyance), गुस्सा होना (gussaa honaa, stronger, more about anger than lingering irritation)
Frequency: medium
Cultural Note: This is the verb behind the very common taunt चिढ़ाना मत (chidhaanaa mat, 'don't tease me') -- चिढ़ना (chidhnaa) is what you do when someone succeeds in getting under your skin, and चिढ़ाना (chidhaanaa) is what the other person is doing to you. Siblings and school kids use this pair constantly.
Common Mistakes: 1) Learners often reach for गुस्सा होना (gussaa honaa) when चिढ़ना (chidhnaa) is meant -- चिढ़ना is a quieter, more chronic irritation, closer to being 'peeved' than being angry. 2) The source of irritation is marked with से (se), not पर (par) or को (ko), which learners sometimes default to by analogy with other emotion verbs.
