तकलीफ़ देना (takliif denaa)

verb A compound built from तकलीफ़ (takliif, trouble/pain) plus देना (denaa, to give) -- literally 'to give trouble.' Covers causing physical pain/discomfort and, just as commonly, bothering or inconveniencing someone. See also तकलीफ़ होना (takliif honaa), the intransitive counterpart meaning 'to feel/have trouble.'
Sense 1 : to bother, inconvenience someone
verb, transitive Takes the bothered person as a direct object, often marked with को: उसे तकलीफ़ मत दो (use takliif mat do, 'don't trouble him/her').
Synonyms: परेशान करना (pareshaan karnaa), तंग करना (tang karnaa, colloquial), दिक़्क़त देना (diqqat denaa)
Frequency: high
Cultural Note: This is the phrase behind the extremely common polite hedge तकलीफ़ के लिए माफ़ी (takliif ke lie maafii, 'sorry for the trouble') and आपको तकलीफ़ हुई (aapko takliif huii, 'you were troubled') that hosts and guests exchange in Delhi households -- it is as much a social lubricant as a literal description of bothering someone.
Common Mistakes: 1) Learners often reach for परेशान करना (pareshaan karnaa) by default; तकलीफ़ देना (takliif denaa) is the softer, more polite choice, especially in requests like माफ़ करें, तकलीफ़ दे रहा हूँ (maaf karen, takliif de rahaa hoon, 'sorry to trouble you'). 2) The object of bother is a person marked with को, not से -- साबिर से तकलीफ़ देना (saabir se takliif denaa) is wrong; it should be साबिर को (saabir ko).
Sample Sentences:
माफ़ कीजिए, मैं आपको तकलीफ़ दे रहा हूँ। Sorry, I'm troubling you.
(maaf kiijie, main aapko takliif de rahaa hoon।)
Register: Formal -- Mood: Indicative -- Aspect: Continuous -- Tense: Present -- Voice: Active

Sense 2 : to cause physical pain or discomfort
verb, transitive Used for a body part or condition causing pain to someone: यह जूता मुझे तकलीफ़ देता है (yah jootaa mujhe takliif detaa hai, 'this shoe hurts me').
Synonyms: दर्द देना (dard denaa), कष्ट देना (kasht denaa, more formal/literary)
Frequency: medium
Cultural Note: Doctors and elders in Delhi often soften a diagnosis with this phrase -- कहाँ तकलीफ़ दे रहा है? (kahaan takliif de rahaa hai?, 'where is it hurting you?') -- treating the pain as something actively 'given' by a part of the body, which fits Hindi's broader habit of framing sensations as arriving from outside rather than being generated by the self.
Common Mistakes: 1) Learners sometimes use दर्द होना (dard honaa) and तकलीफ़ देना (takliif denaa) interchangeably, but the latter needs an agent or cause doing the hurting (the shoe, the wound, the illness), whereas दर्द होना (dard honaa) just states that pain exists, with no agent implied.
