A formal way of saying 'etcetera, and so on' at the end of a list; one sense only. Closely related in function to वगैरह (vagairah) but pitched at a more bookish register.

adverb Placed after a list of nouns to mean 'and so on' -- e.g. फल, सब्ज़ी, अनाज इत्यादि (phal, sabzii, anaaj ityaadi, 'fruit, vegetables, grains, etc.'). Functions like a trailing conjunctive tag on a list rather than a standalone adverb of manner.

Cultural Note: You will meet इत्यादि (ityaadi) constantly in textbooks, official notices, and news writing, but in the market or at home people almost always say वगैरह (vagairah) instead. Reaching for इत्यादि (ityaadi) in conversation can sound a touch schoolteacherish, which is fitting since it is exactly where you will meet it most: school.
Common Mistakes: 1) Learners often reach for इत्यादि (ityaadi) in casual speech where a native speaker would say वगैरह (vagairah) instead -- इत्यादि (ityaadi) reads as bookish or formal, more at home in an essay or a lecture than in a chat with friends. 2) It cannot be used mid-sentence the way 'etc.' sometimes floats in English; it belongs at the end of the listed items.
