A small but essential particle/conjunction: mainly marks the 'then' half of an if-then structure or picks up a topic already on the table, and separately works as an emphatic particle adding stress, contrast, or impatience to whatever it follows.

Cultural Note: This is the तो (to) of the classic अगर...तो (agar...to, 'if...then') frame taught early on, but native speakers use it constantly even in casual chat, e.g. picking up a dangling topic: तुम नहीं आए, तो मैं चला गया (tum nahiin aae, to main chalaa gayaa, 'you didn't come, so I left').
Common Mistakes: 1) Learners often insert तो (to) into every English 'then' translation, but in many if-then sentences native speakers drop it entirely and let the two clauses simply sit side by side. 2) Confusing this correlative तो (to) with the emphatic तो (to) that follows a single word rather than a whole clause.

Cultural Note: This is the तो (to) you hear in everyday grumbling like यह तो बहुत ज़्यादा है (yah to bahut zyaadaa hai, 'well, this is just too much') -- it does the emotional heavy lifting English does with stress or tone of voice, since Hindi speakers often use a particle instead of raising their pitch.
Common Mistakes: 1) Learners tend to skip this तो (to) entirely since it has no fixed English equivalent, but dropping it can make a sentence sound flatter or less natural than the native version, e.g. मुझे तो पता नहीं (mujhe to pataa nahiin, 'well, I for one don't know'). 2) It is easy to confuse this contrastive तो (to) with भी (bhii); तो (to) singles something out in contrast ('as for X...'), while भी (bhii) adds ('X too').
